Why choose Rosanna Brown English Tuition?

I’m Rosanna, founder of Rosanna Brown English Tuition. I am a qualified and experienced English teacher, a GCSE English examiner and a published author, with 12 years’ experience teaching English in secondary education. During my career, I have worked as Associate Curriculum Director for English, Second in the English Department and Leader of Curriculum Development for English. I have also led whole-school reading and literacy, alongside several smaller roles, including responsibility for the progress of higher and lower attainers in English. My background spans classroom teaching, curriculum design, assessment and English leadership. I have taught English across the full ability range, from academically highly able students to young people working significantly below age-related expectations, giving me a strong understanding of not just what students need to learn but how to help different learners access it.

But expertise is only part of what I offer.

I started Rosanna Brown English Tuition because I wanted to bring that expertise into a more personal setting: one where high-quality, academically ambitious English teaching can be shaped around the individual student. In fact, one of the things I value most about tuition is the opportunity to recognise that no two students are the same. You see, in a classroom — and even with the very best intentions — it is not always possible to give every young person the time, attention and carefully tailored support they deserve. In tuition, I can take the time to understand each student’s strengths, gaps, interests and goals, then plan teaching that is both rigorous and responsive to them as an individual.

For highly able and ambitious students, my approach often involves going beyond the examination specification: exploring increasingly sophisticated interpretations, making connections across texts and ideas, and developing the intellectual independence, precision and critical voice needed to work at the very highest level. I have extensive experience teaching high-attaining students and previously held responsibility for their academic progress, so I understand how to stretch able learners without simply giving them more work. This can be particularly valuable for students with a genuine passion for English who may be considering studying the subject at A-level and, ultimately, university. As a published author myself, I love being able to nurture an interest in English that extends beyond examinations and into literature, language and writing more broadly.

Equally, I have considerable experience supporting students who need a different approach to accessing English. I have a particular interest in SEND, developed through my previous experience working within a school SEND department and many years of teaching students with a wide range of additional needs. I believe understanding why a student is finding something difficult is just as important as identifying what they need to improve. Personalised tuition provides the time and flexibility to find the right approach, break learning into manageable steps and build from each student’s individual starting point.

I also love working with students who lack confidence in English or simply don’t enjoy the subject. There are few things more rewarding than seeing something finally click, watching confidence begin to grow or seeing a student’s face light up on results day because their hard work has paid off. For me, though, good tutoring isn’t only about what a student achieves at the end of it; it’s also about their experience along the way. I want students to work hard and make real progress. But I also want them to smile during our sessions too. English has a reputation for being a rather ‘serious’ subject — I don’t see why learning it has to be!

So, if you are looking for a tutor who will take the time to get to know your child, understand how they learn, believe in their potential and help them grow in confidence, while also making English feel more accessible and enjoyable, then you have come to the right place. Above all, if you are looking for someone who will be one hundred per cent committed to your child and their progress, that is exactly what I aim to offer.
